Deed Zachariah Lewis to Zachariah R. Lewis and Betty May wife of N.E. May 1858

This Deed made this 3rd day of September in the year 1858 between Zachariah Lewis of the first part, Zachariah R. Lewis of the second part and Betty May wife of N.E. May of the third part. Witnesseth, that the said Zachariah Lewis in consideration of one dollar doth convey bargain & sell unto the said Zachariah R. Lewis a negro girl named Martha Ellen and her future increase. In Trust for the sole, separate and exclusive use of the said Betty May for and during her natural life to be free from the debts or control of her husband the said N.E. May, and upon this further trust, that when the said Betty May dies it shall be the  duty of the said Zachariah R. Lewis to convey the said negro and her increase to the children of the said Betty May. And if, at any time the said Zachariah R Lewis shall deem it expedient to do so, he may sell the said Negro Girl and her increase and invest the proceeds in other property to be held by him for the benefit of the said Betty May upon the same trusts provisions and limitations as are before described in relation to the said negro girl Witness the following signatures and seals. Albemarle County to wit, I James W Mason a Justice of the Peace for said County & State of Virginia do certify that Zachariah Lewis whose name is signed to the writing above, bearing date on the 3d day of September 1858, has acknowledged the same before me in my County aforesaid. Given under my hand this 4t day of September 1858. J W Mason J.P.

In the Clerks Office of Albemarle County Oct 8t 1858.
