Know all men by these presents, that I John C. Carter of the County of Albemarle I the state of Virginia for and in consideration of the natural love and affection which I have and bear unto my three infant children Robert Hill Carter, Anne Carey Carter and John Coles Carter of the County and State aforesaid, and for divers other good causes and considerations me, the said John C. Carter, hereunto moving, have given, granted and confirmed, and by these presents, do give, grant and confirm unto the said Robert Hill Carter, Anne Carey Carter and John Coles Carter, to be equally divided between them, the following negro slaves, named George Little Robin, Big Robin, James Edward, Priscilla and her children, Louisa, Malvina, Betty, Margaret, George Spencer, Jinney, Nancy & William Scott, Camilla, Sarah, John Henrietta and Malvina with all and singular the future increase of the females thereof being the same acquired by me, the said John C. Carter in right of my late wife, Ellen M. Carter, formerly Ellen M Bankhead, and mother of my said infant children. To have and to hold the said negro slaves and the future increase of the females thereof, unto them the said Robert Hill Carter, Anne Carey Carter and John Coles Carter, their executors, administrators and assigns forever, to the only proper use and behoof of them, the said Robert Hill Carter, Anne Carey Carter and John Coles Carter, their executors, administrators and assigns forever. And I, the said John C. Carter for the causes and considerations herein before expressed have also given, granted and confirmed, and by these presents do further, give, grant and confirm unto the said Robert Hill Carter, two other negro slaves, named Maria and William – to the said Anne Carey Carter one other negro slave named Sally – and to the said John Coles Carter one other negro slave named Jesse. To have and to hold the said last mentioned negro slaves, and the future increase of the females thereof, unto them and each of them, the said Robert Hill Carter, Anne Carey Carter and John Coles Carter, their and each of their executors administrators and assigns, as they the said negro slaves are herein severally and respectively given and granted to the only proper use and behoof of them, and each of them, the said Robert Hill Carter, Anne Carey Carter and John Coles Carter, their executors, administrators and assigns forever. And I, the said John Carter, all and singular the said negro slaves, and the future increase of the females thereof, unto them the said Robert Hill Carter, Anna Carey Carter and John Coles Carter, and each of them their and each of their executors, administrators and assigns against me, the said John C. Carter, my executors and administrators and against all and every other person and persons whomsoever shall and will by these presents, forever warrant and defend. Provided nevertheless, and it is hereby understood and so declared, that I, the said John C Carter have retained and reserved, and by these presents, do retain and reserve to my= self, during the term of my natural life, the full, free and undisturbed use and possession of the said negro slaves herein before mentioned, and each and every of them, making in all twenty four, together with the future increase of the females thereof, as also, the right to demand, have, receive and appropriate to my own uses and purposes, absolutely and without restriction or limitation, for and during the said term of my natural life, the annual hires and profits of the said negro slaves, and of each and every of them, and the future increase of the females thereof Provided also, and at or herby further understood and declared that I, the said John C. Carter have moreover returned and reserved, and by these presents, do retain and reserve to myself, full power and authority deed or will duly made and authenticated, of hereafter deemed necessary by me, to direct and appoint the hires, profits and labour of the said negro slaes, and the future increases of the females thereof to be applied to the use, benefit and support, maintenance and preferment of my said children, and each or either of their, and their descendants, or the descendants of either of them, in such manner and upon such terms and in such portions, as I, the said John C. Carter, may, on my discretion, think most conducive to their comfort, convenience, interest and advancement and provided further and lastly and it is hereby also understood and declared, that in the event of the death of either of my said children under the age of twenty one years, without issue of such child or children then living, the said negro slaves hereby given and granted or intended to be hereby given and granted to such child or children, so dying, and the future increase of the females thereof, shall pass to and be- come the property of my said surviving child or children and the descendants of such as may be dead, in equal portion – giving to the descendants of such as may be dead, such share or portion as the deceased child or children would have been entitled to, if he or she were then living; and should all of my said children die, under the age of twenty one years, without issue then living, the said negro slaves and the future increase of the females thereof, and all the right, title property and estate therein shall remain to, and revert in me the said John C Carter, my executors, administrators and assigns forever in as full and ample manner as of this deed had never been made.
