Whereas George Slaughter has paid to Elizabeth Wilson the sum of thirty seven dollars, and whereas, other persons have paid to said Elizabeth Wilson the said different sums of money as hereinafter is respectively annexed to their names: to wit, Joseph Norris, C. M. Brand, George W. Briggs, C. O. Childress, William Scruggs, Thomas Woodson, William Fife, A.P. Abell and John Schraff, each one dollar,  and C. L. Thompson, F. W. Dodd, William Cheatham and James F.  Bowyer each fifty cents, And whereas, other persons not herein particularly named have paid and contributed small sums towards raising an amount of money paid to said Elizabeth Wilson as purchase money of a certain negro woman slave named Rachael Wheat, which sum of money so paid, amounts to the sum of one hundred dollars, Now, therefore, this Indenture made this, the  Eighth day of April in the year 1852 between George Slaughter of the first part, Elizabeth Wilson of the second part, and all other persons who may have contributed Andy sum of money towards raising the amount of money so paid to Elizabeth Wilson in purchase money of said Rachael Wheat, whether the same be particularly named or otherwise referred to: in the preamble to this Indenture is not, of the third part, Witnesseth, that the said Elizabeth Wilson, for and in consideration of the payment of the said sum of one hundred dollars, so paid to Elizabeth Wilson, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, by the said Elizabeth Wilson, hath this day bargained and sold, and by these presents doth bargain and sell and convey unto the said George Slaughter a certain negro woman slave named Rachel Wheat, To have and to hold to him the said George Slaughter, his executors and Administrators forever. And the said Elizabeth Wilson for herself, her executors and Administrators, the said woman Rachael Wheat unto the said George Slaughter, his executors administrators and assigns, against the said Elizabeth Wilson her executors, administrators and assigns, and against no other persons shall and will warrant and defend forever by these presents. Yet upon the following trusts, conditions and provisions that whenever at any time in future the said Rachael Wheat or any other person for or in her behalf shall refund to the said George Slaughter, or to his executors or administrators the said sum of thirty seven dollars, with such interest as may accrue thereon, and shall also refund to each of the other persons, who may have contributed any sum of money towards raising the amount of purchase money of said Rachael Wheat, or to their executors or administrators the sums of money so contributed, by each of such persons whether the said persons be herein particularly named or in any other manner referred to, or not, then and in that case the said Rachael Wheat shall be entitled to receive and it is by these presents expressly made to be the duty of the said George Slaughter to execute & deliver to the said Rachael Wheat, a good and proper deed of Freedom and manumit and there by ??? and set free and discharge said Rachael Wheat from all future and further claims for slavery and service of any character on the part of said George Slaughter, as well as of other persons whatsoever. And yet upon this further trust, condition and provision, that whereas at any future time the said Rachael Wheat, or any other person for her and in her behalf shall refund to the said George Slaughter or his executors or administrators the said sum of thirty seven dollars with such interest as may accrue therein, and a majority of number of those persons herein specially named as having contributed certain sums of money towards raising the purchase money of said Rachael Wheat, or in the event of the death of any such persons, their executors or administrators shall agree and unite with the said Rachael Wheat, in recommending some person in their opinion fit, as a substitute for said George Slaughter, and at the same time request and demand of the said George Slaughter a deed or bill of sale conveying to such person so recommended the said negro woman slave Rachael Wheat, then and in that case the said George Slaughter shall further with execute and deliver to the person so recommended a good and proper deed or bill of sale completely and entirely transfering and conveying the title and ownership of said Rachael Wheat from said George Slaughter to said person so recommended in which said deed or bill of sale shall be embraced and fully declared the like and the same trusts, conditions & provisions as are herein contained and set forth: And the said deed or bill of sale shall prevail and be of such effect as to invest and clothe the said person so recommended and substituted with all the powers, duties and privileges as are by this Indenture conferred in and rested in the said George Slaughter, And yet upon this further trust, condition and provision, that whenever at any future time the said Rachael Wheat or any other person for her and in her behalf, shall pay and refund the said sum of thirty seven dollars is by him paid and constituted: to the said George Slaughter Together with such interest as may accrue thereon, and then a numerical majority of those persons herein specially named as having contributed certain sums of money toward raising the amount of the purchase money of said Rachael Wheat, to wit Joseph Norris, C. M. Brand, George W. Briggs, C.E.  Childress, William Scruggs, Thomas Woodson, William Fife, A. P. Abell, John Scraff, C. L. Thompson, F. W. Dodd, William Cheatham and James F. Bowyer, in such majority of the said Persons as their may be living and residing within the County of Albemarle shall agree and unite with the said Rachael Wheat, in a written petition and request, and demand to the said George Slaughter: requesting and demanding from the said George Slaughter a deed of Freedom and Manumission for the said Rachael Wheat, then and in that case, the said George Slaughter, his executors, or administrators, shall forthwith execute and deliver to the said Rachel Wheat, and it is by these presents expressly made the duty of said George Slaughter, his executors and administrators furtherwith to execute, and deliver to the said Rachael Wheat, a good and proper deed of Freedom and Manumission; by said deed setting free and discharging from all claims of slavery or service, the said Rachael Wheat, on the part of the said George Slaughter and all other persons whatsoever, And this shall be done & executed when so requested, altho. the said Rachael Wheat may have paid no portion of said sum of money contributed and paid as the purchase money of said Rachael Wheat, And it is expressly agreed and understood between the parties to this Indenture that in the event of the death and decease of the said George Slaughter whilst the legal title may remain and be vested in him: the said title shall pass to his executors or administrators, and his executors or administrators shall be invested with all the powers and privileges and subject to all the duties, liabilities trusts, conditions and provisions as are by this deed. and imposed on said George Slaughter, In testimony whereof the parties have hereunto set their hands and affixed their seals the day and year hereinbefore written as the date hereof.
