Commonwealth of Virginia Albemarle County to wit
We the subscribers, Joseph Harper and William Garland, freeholders of the county of Albemarle in the state of Virginia do hereby certify that Tom aged eighteen years of the male five feet ten inches high a negro and having Black complexion, was purchased in Albemarle County by J Carter from Lyman Peck. In witness whereof we have signed this certificate at Albemarle courthouse this 10th day of Octo 1829. Wm Garland Joseph Harper
Joseph Harper & William Garland being duly sworn, do declare and say that they have known the slave Tom mentioned in the above certificate, bearing their signatures for several years, and that he has not within our knowledge been guilty or convicted of any crime but that he has a good moral character and not in the habit of running away. Albemarle County to wit:
This day the within named Joseph Harper & William Garland personally appeared before me a Justice of the peace for the county aforesaid & made to the truth of the within certificate. Given under my hand this 19th day of October 1829. Samuel Carr J Peace
Know all men by these presents that I Lyman Peck of Albemarle County state of Virginia for value received, have bargained & sold one negro man by the name of Tom of the within description to J. Carter and I do hereby warrant the title of said negro to said Carter. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this 19th day of October 1829. Lyman Peck {seal}

This Bill of Sale and the certificates thereto annexed, was presented to me in said office and acknowledged by the parties and thereupon admitted to record. Test. Ira Garrett D.C.
I Alexander Garrett do hereby declare and certify that the preceding certificate and declaration on oath of Wm Garland & Joseph Harper were executed and made before me as clerk of the county court of Albemarle and I do further certify and declare, that the said Wm Garland & Joseph Harper are men of good character, and that they are not the venders of the slaves mentioned in the said certificate and declaration and I do further declare and certify that the office before whom the said declaration has been taken and made, was & still is duly authorized to administer oaths. Finally, I do declare and certify that the said Wm Garland & Joseph Harper are respectable and well known freeholders of the county of Albemarle in the state of Virginia witness whereof I have signed this certificate, and affixed thereto the seal of the County of which I am the clerk, at my office this 19th day of October 1829, in the 54th year of the commonwealth.
